چکیده

We use an N–body/hydrodynamic simulation to forecast the future encounter between the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxies, given current observational constraints on their relative distance, relative velocity, and masses. Allowing for a comparable amount of diffuse mass to fill the volume of the Local Group, we find that the two galaxies are likely to collide in a few billion years within the Sun’s lifetime. During the first close encounter of the two galaxies, there is a 12% chance that the Sun will be pulled from its present position and reside in the extended tidal material. After the second close encounter, there is a 30% chance that the Sun will reside in the extended tidal material, and a 2.7% chance that our Sun will be more tightly bound to Andromeda than to the Milky Way. Eventually, after the merger has completed, the Sun is likely to be scattered to the outer halo and reside at much larger radii (> 30 kpc). The density profiles of the stars, gas and dark matter in the merger product resemble those of elliptical galaxies. Our Local Group model therefore provides a prototype progenitor of late–forming elliptical galaxies.

A trio of new Local Group galaxies with extreme properties

We report on the discovery of three new dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. These galaxies are found in new CFHT/MegaPrime g, i imaging of the southwestern quadrant of M31, extending our extant survey area to include the majority of the southern hemisphere of M31’s halo out to 150 kpc. All these galaxies have stellar populations which appear typical of dwarf spheroidal (dSph) systems. The first ...

Proper Motions in the Andromeda Subgroup

This article presents results of VLBI observations of regions of H2O maser activity in the Local Group galaxies M33 and IC 10. Since all position measurements were made relative to extragalactic background sources, the proper motions of the two galaxies could be measured. For M33, this provides this galaxy’s three dimensional velocity, showing that this galaxy is moving with a velocity of 190 ±...

I present the preliminary results of a program to measure the star formation history in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy. Using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, we obtained the deepest optical images of the sky to date, in a field on the southeast minor axis of Andromeda, 51′ (11 kpc) from the nucleus. The resulting color-magnitude diagram (CMD) contains appr...

Constraints on the Proper Motion of the Andromeda Galaxy Based on the Survival of Its Satellite M33 through the Dynamics of the Local Group

Amajor uncertainty in the dynamical history of the local group of galaxies originates from the unknown transverse speed of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) relative to the Milky Way. We show that the recent VLBA measurement of the proper motion of Andromeda’s satellite, M33, severely constrains the possible values of M31’s proper motion. The condition that M33’s stellar disk will not be tidally disru...
